Not in New York. Not with the Yankees. They missed the postseason and went ahead and made wholesale changes. Solid veterans Jacoby Ellsbury, Brian McCann, Brian Roberts, Kelly Johnson and others were brought in to stabilize the club. With potential No. 1 pitcher Masahiro Tanaka, the Yankees should be a contender again in 2014. If Jeter can stay on the field and out of the training room, it would be a huge emotional lift for a club looking to get back to the World Series. Nothing less is acceptable for the Yankees. HITTING Jacoby Ellsbury was an expensive free agent acquisition—seven years, $153 million— but that’s the market. And Ellsbury is the type of catalyst who can help lead the Yankees back to the World Series. He hit .298 and had 172 hits for the Red Sox last season. In addition, Ellsbury swiped 52 bases and that led to extra runs at opportunistic times for the Red Sox. Mark Teixeira was limited to 15 games because of injury and his 341 career home runs explain his worth. If he’s in the lineup, the Yankees will reap the benefits. The same goes for Jeter, who has 3,316 career hits. More than that, Jeter provides all those intangibles that every club needs. Even now, Jeter can provide offense. The Yankees gave up 21 more runs than they scored last season and that was a problem all season. With the changes in the offseason, the Bronx Bombers are in line to become a better offensive club.
