J. Wilson 2014 STRENGTHS: • Strong balanced lineup if healthy • Top of rotation 2014 WEAKNESSES: • Questionable bullpen • Uncertainty with Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton The Angels made two of the biggest splashes in consecutive offseasons with the signings of Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton before the 2012 and 2013 campaigns. Yet those superstars took a backseat as Mike Trout leaped to best-player-in-the-game status in two superlative seasons that still saw the Angels miss the playoffs. HITTING Any team that has Trout is going to be among the best offenses in the game. His numbers are video game-like, with a .323 batting average, 27 homers, 109 runs, 97 RBI and a .432 OBP in 2012. And he’s just 22! Pujols is healthy after a season cut short after 99 games, and he’s determined at 34 to get back among the game’s elite hitters. Hamilton’s struggles were hard to read, but he is just a year removed from hitting 43 home runs. Howie Kendrick hit .297 with 13 home runs, while his double-play partner Erick Aybar hit a solid .271. 2011 World Series MVP David Freese joined the Angels via trade, and is looking to regain his 20-home run power from two years ago. Ageless Raul Ibanez is the DH, and is coming off a season where he hit 29 homers. AL WEST R. YEATTS/GETTY IMAGES SPORT
