Last year marked the fourth consecutive season the Marlins lost more games than the previous year, and while it’s unlikely the team will fall below the 62-win mark in 2014, there can be no expectation of contention from this team, and frankly, not a lot of hope for much success on the horizon. HITTING There weren’t too many major hitting categories in which the Marlins didn’t finish last or near the bottom in the National League last year, and it’s unlikely there will be a huge improvement in 2014. Everything in terms of offense with the Marlins begins with outfielder Giancarlo Stanton, who played only 116 games last year but still slugged 24 homers. Other teams covet him, but the Marlins have actually been smart enough to hold on to Stanton. He’s a star and a big producer. So, who else is there? There is some help in the lineup. The addition of catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia was a good one, because Miami backstops were awful last season. Stanton’s outfield mates, Marcell Ozuna and Christian Yelich are young and unproven, but each has a pile of potential. Yelich has plenty of speed, and Ozuna has a bat that could produce runs. First baseman Garrett Jones joins the Marlins after five productive years with the Pirates and is a threat to hit 25 dingers. NL EAST MIKE EHRMANN/GETTY IMAGES SPORT
