On this CLEVELAND CAVALIERS 2014-15 SCHEDULE Cleveland team, James is the only plus defender in the starting lineup. Cleveland will probably have to choose between either giving James a heavy workload, or reducing his minutes and asking him to be engaged on defense. Center Anderson Varejao is an injury-prone player who can rebound extremely well, but he gets bullied in the post at times and can struggle against opponents with a good lowpost game due to his relatively undersized 6-10 stature. Shooting guard Dion Waiters has adopted some of Irving’s bad habits, often slacking on defense and focusing strictly on his offensive game. The biggest challenge for everybody on this Cleveland team will be to come together as a unit and work together under new head coach David Blatt. The potential is there for the Cavaliers to be a strong defensive team, but it will be a work in progress throughout the season. Offense As much as learning how to play team defense will be a challenge for the Cavaliers, scoring points should come about as naturally as it has for any team in NBA history. Among LeBron James, Kevin Love, and Kyrie Irving, the Cavaliers boast three genuine superstars as offensive players, and three players who should mesh together extremely well. James is one of the few players in the NBA who can not only be the focal point of an offense, but can do just about everything at a high level while being the eye of the storm. James is an extremely smart player who almost always makes the right decision. His ability to attack the basket is unmatched in the League today, and James has become smarter about when to attack and when to defer. His field goal percentage has increased for seven years in a row now, reaching a high of 56.7 percent last year, an insane number for a wing player. Opponents have to constantly account for James as a multi-dimensional threat. The best way to prevent James from scoring is to construct two layers of defense for James to get through, but that inevitably leaves open options for James to pass to—and James is a very intelligent passer. Having Love’s scoring ability, both from three-point range and in the low post, will be a tremendous complement to James’s skills. Love is the best kind of stretch four a team can have—a stretch four who is also very good at scoring in close range and is one of the League’s top rebounders as well.
