SENATORS 74 Erik Karlson’s 74 points made him the only defenseman in the league to crack the top 40 in scoring. They were undisciplined all year, especially in the early parts of the season where they got off to 4-6-4 start and allowed 43 goals in regulation. Without any major additions to the blue line, it will be up to the same group of guys to step up their game. On top of his phenomenal playmaking ability, Karlsson is also a former Norris Trophy winner. He was second in the league amongst non-goalies with over 27 minutes of ice-time per game. But with such outstanding offensive play, it’s hard to fault Karlsson for not having his best defensive season. He has the ability to be a rock on both ends of the ice, and the Senators will need him to get back to that. Methot was the team’s next most reliable defenseman last season and it earned him some time paired beside Karlsson. But it did not earn him enough leverage at the negotiating table as his agent and Senators’ GM Bryan Murray got into a public spat over the terms of Methot’s contract. Former first round draft pick Jared Cowen will be looked upon to step up his game and fortify the defense. After struggling with injuries the previous season, Cowen looked lost at times last year and was unable to use his big frame and physical style to affect the game. It was 20-year old Ottawa native Cody Ceci that did stand out. Although he only played in 49 games for the Senators and wasn’t expected to make much of an impact, Ceci forced his way onto the roster with his defensive skills and a game winner in the Heritage Classic. Both Ceci and Cowen will have the benefit of long-time veteran Senator Chris Phillips. Although he doesn’t have the skills he once possessed in his youth, Phillips can be a tremendous asset to the team, which will look to inexperienced players such as Patrick Wiercioch and Mark Borowiecki to play valuable defensive minutes. Goaltending Goaltending was supposed to be a strong point for the Senators, but that did not play out in 2013-14. Coming off of a spectacular lockshortened season where his .941 save percentageand 1.69 GAA led
