Timing is everything in life and the same applies to baseball when it comes to the iffy issue of when to break a rookie into the majors on a full-time basis. Unlike football, which puts 99 percent of its rookies on the field in September, as soon as they’re good enough and healthy enough to start. Unlike basketball, which puts 99 percent of its rooks on the court in November, as soon as they’re good enough and healthy enough to start. Baseball is just different. Sometimes the rookies are brought up from the minor leagues midseason, after, say, an injury to a big leaguer, when the need for the SUPER SIX Leading the way for Rookie of the Year are a SEXTET of standouts.
