Jay-Z’s client adds one of the most potent bats in baseball to the Mariners lineup, and they needed it. Other new faces joining Cano are Corey Hart, Logan Morrison and closer Fernando Rodney. How revamped Safeco Field treats the hitters this season could tell the Mariners’ 2014 story. HITTING Robinson Cano has missed 14 games since the start of the 2007 season. That’s an average of two missed games per season, so he’ll be there every day as the fulcrum of the Mariners’ offense. The second baseman has hit no less than 25 home runs since 2009, and has topped 100 RBI three of the past four seasons. Just write him into the third spot in the lineup every day. Without much fanfare third baseman Kyle Seager has developed consistent 20-homer power. Corey Hart and Logan Morrison bring powerful bats, but they have to remain healthy, which has been difficult of late. Mike Zunino takes over behind the plate after being highly touted in the minor leagues. Dustin Ackley and Justin Smoak will take another shot at living up to their own minor league reputations as up-and-coming hitters. Smoak, at least, hit 20 home runs in 454 at-bats last season.
